From his beginnings as a representational painter, through different steps
along the way to a very individualized expression that is most simply called
abstract, he has remained first and foremost a colorist. His canvases delight in
color, color which is representative of the natural environments in which he works.
The "notational" strokes - short slashes of harmonious color - do not necessarily
bear a one - to - one correspondence to the specific look of a place, however:
they are more symbolic of the spirit of place, which dictates its own set of color
and spatial relationships.
