Denis Boudreau

Denis Boudreau received private tutoring in art at an early age, studying with William Dow, who would become a founding member of the Hayloft Group.  Boudreau later attended St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.  While primarily a self-taught artists, he received formal art training first at The Portland School of Art and then at the former Concept School of Visual Studies where he studied with artists William Manning and Polly Brown.  It was there that Boudreau began creating the sculptures in bronze, polyester resin, welded steel and wood for which he became known.

In the late sixties, Boudreau was among the first artists to have a studio in Portland’s Old Port area during its renaissance.  Along with other artists such as Jon Legere and Bob Drinon, Boudreau was instrumental in revitalizing the arts district.  Boudreau studied Japanese architecture, philosophy and art, but became influenced by impressionistic and abstract painters as well.  After a number of years working in the restoration of old homes, Boudreau began painting in acrylic, watercolors and pastels.  In addition to painting, he is currently creating sculptures from found objects.

Boudreau’s sculpture and paintings have been widely exhibited in the Northeast and Washington, D.C. area.  Boudreau resides in Falmouth where he owns and operates an organic vegetable farm with his wife Sarah and their two sons.
